Sweet Sweep! Longhorns Move To 9-6

It was a rough couple of days of practice with injuries and illnesses. Heading into the matches, the Longhorns were down an outside hitter (Laura), a libero (Eliana) and a defensive specialist (Alexis), but the girls played soooo hard and hustled so much to defeat Lassiter B and Walton B on Thursday night. Here are some stats on the matches:

Amalie Alvarez: 15 aces, 24 sets
Savannah Corr: 5 digs, 3 aces, 2 kills
Julie Edwards: 4 digs, 7 aces, 1 kill
Gina Hogan: 4 digs, 1 kill

Another Split For Kell Juniors

The Junior Longhorns had their first home match of the season on Thursday night, falling to Walton B in two sets but defeating Sprayberry in two sets. Without middle Brittany Stocus there, Savannah Corr stepped in as middle and did an excellent job with the transition. Here are some statistics from the night:

Amalie Alvarez: 19 sets
Savannah Corr: 4 kills, 5 digs
Julie Edwards: 1 ace, 4 digs
Gina Hogan: 4 digs
Ashley Jones: 4 aces, 5 kills, 12 digs
Laura Kirby: 2 aces, 1 kill, 6 digs
Kelsey Lowman: 1 ace, 7 digs
Eliana Tiller: 4 aces, 10 digs
Alexis Vasquez: 7 digs

Monday's match against Walton B has been canceled so the girls will get the night off. Practice will resume on Tuesday and Wednesday night followed by a match at Lassiter on Thursday.

We are going to change things up a little bit at practice, which will hopefully get the girls spirits back up! Enjoy your weekend!

Longhorns Split at Pope Tri-Match

The Longhorns split at the Pope Tri-Match on Tuesday night, falling to Walker A in the first match but defeating the home team, Pope, in the nightcap. The girls looked a little dazed and confused in the first game and didn't really seem to know what was going on (much to my dismay). But, they rebounded in game two and played very strong defense. The MVP of the night was definitely Brittany "The Vulcher" Stocus, who was a terror at the net, picking up five blocks in the two matches. Eliana Tiller tore up the court with her serves, tallying 12 aces.

Here are other statistics from the night:
Amalie Alvarez: 22 set attempts, 3 aces
Savannah Corr: 2 aces, 4 digs
Julie Edwards: 3 digs
Gina Hogan: 5 digs
Ashley Jones: 17 digs, 5 kills, 2 aces
Laura Kirby: 8 digs, 4 aces
Kelsey Lowman: 8 sets
Brittany Stocus: 5 blocks, 8 kills
Eliana Tiller: 18 digs, 12 aces
Alexis Vasquez: 8 digs

The girls next match is their first home match of the season! They will get their chance at revenge when they take on Walton A at 6:00 pm then play Sprayberry at 8:00 pm. on Thursday night at Kell High School!

Parents: We will need volunteers to work the tables for our matches and also line judge! Don't be shy!

Thursday Night (9-3-09) Practice Cancelled!

Since most of the girls on the team are sick and I do not want to get the remaining girls sick, practice for Thursday, Sept. 3 is cancelled. I hope everyone relaxes over the weekend and feels better!

Don't forget we have a match on Tuesday night at Pope HS. We play Walton at 6:30 pm and Pope at 7:30. Hope the girls are refreshed and ready to play by then.

Have a great labor day weekend!

Disappointing Show At Junior Warrior Classic

The Junior Longhorns had a disappointing outing at the Junior Warrior Classic on Saturday. The girls went 1-3 on the day, falling to Kennesaw Mountain, Walker A and Marietta but defeating Pace in two sets. Amalie Alvarez was out of town so Kelsey Lowman had to set the entire day and she did great! Unfortunately, Gina Hogan had to leave after the first match because she was very sick. We hope she feels better soon! Here are some stats on the day:

Ashley Jones: 14 kills, 18 aces, 18 digs, 5 blocks
Eliana Tiller: 17 aces, 33 digs
Brittany Stocus: 11 kills, 5 blocks
Savannah Corr: 15 digs, 3 aces, 5 digs
Alexis Vasquez: 8 digs
Kelsey Lowman: had over 50 sets on the day!
Laura Kirby: 9 digs, 4 aces

The girls travel to Lassiter today to take on Lassiter and Pope tonight.

We will have practice on Wednesday and Thursday night from 6-8 pm at Kell HS. I know that practice was not originally scheduled for Wednesday, so if you can not make it I understand.
